Michael Cooper is a professional drummer based in the Bristol/Bath area available for gigs, session work and private tuition. Having recently graduated Bath Spa University with a BA Music degree, Michael is now moving forward with his musical career and gaining experience and recognition as a drummer, having established himself as resident drummer of Circo Bar's weekly Jazz nights and drummer of the Porter Restaurant's jazz trio. Michael has also enjoyed success with The Rosa Gray Band who have made a name for themselves in the Bristol and Bath music scene and have supported such artists as Pendulum, Everything Everything and Foxes.
During his time at university, Michael excelled at jazz performance, receiving 80% for his third year jazz recital and also had the opportunity to perform alongside Jason Rebello, Derek Nash and Iain Ballamy as well as receiving weekly private tuition from Robert Brian (Siouxsie Sioux/Simple Minds). He also had the opportunity to play in various ensembles, including the two university big bands, wind band, orchestra and jazz ensemble as well as being part of various musical theatre and opera productions. He also enjoyed other aspects of the course which included composition, musicology, music analysis and music psychology.
Michael began drumming at the age of nine after listening to Led Zeppelin and being inspired by John Bonham. He practiced daily and would often jam with his brother who played guitar where he discovered a natural talent for improvising and leading. Michael developed his style as a drummer while regularly performing with numerous local rock and pop bands as well as playing along to some of his favourite drummers; Chad Smith, Ginger Baker and Nick Mason, who's styles he has analysed and developed within his own playing. He began playing jazz at university which also led to him exploring new styles of playing including; latin, blues, reggae/ska and funk which he can now play proficiently.
Michael has his own kit and transport and is available for depping and session work. He is proficient in all styles of playing and is able to learn and memorise songs quickly as well as having a talent for improvising and leading. Please get in touch with Michael if you are looking for a drummer for any upcoming performances or recording opportunities.
Michael offers private tuition on a one-to-one basis for beginner and intermediate players. Lessons are tailored for each individual depending on what they wish to learn and can focus on improving playing style, improvising, technique and knowledge as well as the optional Trinity/Guildhall Graded pathway. There is, of course, always the option to just learn for fun! Michael either teaches through home visits or in Factory Studios, Bristol.
